Hey there, Muslim parents!

Picking a name for a newborn is a big deal in Muslim families! The name is believed to influence their life and should reflect their Islamic values. Modern urban Muslim parents are often influenced by famous people across different genres, and they usually try to pick names that sound trendy and unique but also represent Islamic virtues and good qualities in the hope these names will inspire their children to be good and bring them blessings.

Arabic names are most popular because they connect the baby to the broader Muslim world. Sometimes, parents ask the family, the religious leaders (imam), or grandparents for ideas. The first name is often a memorable Islamic name, and the baby might have a shorter nickname for everyday use.

To help you out, Mom&Tiny put together a massive list of names for Muslim baby names. You can sort them by gender, alphabet, or even numerology.

First, let's examine the name lists directly. Later on the page, we'll also discuss some traditional ceremonies that Muslim families follow when naming their babies, like the special Tasmiyah ceremony.

How do Muslims Name Their Babies?

The Muslim naming ceremony, called Tasmiyah, is usually held within seven days of the baby's birth. The name is finalised during a naming ceremony where Daddy takes on his first significant duty of finalising the name of the little one. The ceremony is a heartfelt celebration akin to introducing your child to the world with a blessing.

The naming ceremony is generally accompanied by a ritual called Aqiqah, a beautiful tradition where the baby's head is shaved to symbolise a new beginning.

Silver, gold, or other precious goods equivalent to the weight of the newborn's hair are donated as a charity. The family also sacrifices one or two goats (two for a baby boy and one for a baby girl) for the feast with family and friends later in the evening. A third of the meat is also donated to charity, spreading joy and blessings further and genuinely embodying the warmth and community spirit of the event.

There are some formal restrictions in the naming of Muslim Babies; mentioning them below.

  1. Parents should stick to names that show devotion only to Allah. For example, the 99 names of Allah are acceptable as long as you add "Abdul" (meaning "servant of")
  2. Parents need to skip names that have ties to servitude to anyone but Allah, names of tyrants, or anything that's non-Muslim
  3. Also, it is recommended to avoid names of animals, objects of worship, names linked to the devil, or just plain meaningless ones
  4. Names for boys and girls differ, with girls' names frequently reflecting aspects such as beauty and elegance.
