Modern-day Muslim parents believe that the name they chose for their babies will have a significant influence on their lives and help reflect their Islamic culture and beliefs. Hence, choosing a name for a newborn in a Muslim family is an important as well as an overwhelming decision.
When I spoke to my Muslim friends during research for this website, they mentioned that while some new parents pick names based on pop culture, most folks still choose names for the meanings and virtues they represent. They often look for names that honour Prophets and imams or represent their good qualities in the hope that they will inspire a righteous life and bring blessings to the baby. Arabic names are often preferred because they symbolise the larger Muslim community's unity and origin.
Naming your newborn is not just an individual's responsibility in a Muslim family; the extended family often comes together to help decide the new baby's name. Parents seek help from older family members, the Imam, or grandparents for name recommendations.
The first name given to Muslim babies is often symbolic and deeply connected to the Islamic faith. It carries a deep significance, and the newborn is also given a second, shorter name by which they are known to their friends and family.

The Muslim naming ceremony, called Tasmiyah, is usually held within seven days of the baby's birth. The name is finalised during a naming ceremony where Daddy takes on his first significant duty of finalising the name of the little one. The ceremony is a heartfelt celebration akin to introducing your child to the world with a blessing.
The naming ceremony is generally accompanied by a ritual called Aqiqah, a beautiful tradition where the baby's head is shaved to symbolise a new beginning.
Silver, gold, or other precious goods equivalent to the weight of the newborn's hair are donated as a charity. The family also sacrifices one or two goats (two for a baby boy and one for a baby girl) for the feast with family and friends later in the evening. A third of the meat is also donated to charity, spreading joy and blessings further and genuinely embodying the warmth and community spirit of the event.
There are some formal restrictions in the naming of Muslim Babies; mentioning them below.
