How Gujaratis Name their Babies?

Birth of a newborn is a momentous occasion in any Indian family, and most Gujarati Hindu families celebrate the birth with a beautiful tradition called the Namkaran ceremony.

The Naming Ceremony

Fui's Role: In earlier times, the paternal aunt (also called Fui) took on the duty of naming the newborn. However, today, parents usually give her a list of shortlisted names and take her opinion before the ceremony.

Astrological Significance: Even today, most Gujarati parents choose the initial letter of the baby's name depending on the Rashi (Vedic astrological sign). For example, if the baby's Rashi is Vrishabh, the name may begin with Ba, Va, or Oo. Families invite a Vedic astrologer or priest to assist with the puja and create the child's Janam Kundali.

If you can find a name you love with the suggested letter, that's great! If you fall in love with a name that begins with a different letter, you should go ahead and follow your heart. Remember that your child's name will be with them forever. Hence, choosing a name that appeals to you and your child is critical.

In some Gujarati families, the baby also takes the father's name as their middle name, maintaining a connection to their lineage.

The Sixth -Day Ritual

According to legend, Vidhaata, the Goddess of Destiny, will visit on the sixth day to write about the newborn's future.

Below is how the ceremony unfolds:

  • The mother lights a diya (lamp) and places the red pen and paper on a wooden plank (baajhat) for Vidhaata to write the baby's fate
  • The baby is dressed in new clothes for the day and presented at the family altar (Gadi/Mandir). The lamp is lit with a wick soaked in ghee, and clean white handkerchiefs and extra pens are placed for future auspicious occasions.
  • Some families use red kumkum powder to make a paste and capture the baby's footprints on a piece of cloth or paper. This acts as a guide for Vidhaata and eventually becomes a cherished keepsake often framed and hung on the wall.

The Celebration

No Gujarati celebration is complete without a feast, and Chatthi is no exception. After the ceremony and the puja are over, a grand feast is organized, where family and friends gather to celebrate the new family member. The event is filled with laughter and joy, as many traditional games are played among the family members.

Modern Touches

Even though Chatthi is deeply rooted in tradition, many modern folks like to add contemporary twists to the ceremony. Some end the puja with a themed party, professional photographers are hired to cover the entire ceremony, or the event is even live-streamed for relatives who can't attend in person. These additions make the event even more memorable and inclusive.
